Did you know that hashtags can actually have a negative impact on your engagement because your audience may not be able to find the content they are looking for?
Get your hashtags wrong and you could actually have the opposite effect of what you are hoping for. The hashtag was originally thought of as a way to aggregate all the content about a particular topic in one place so that users can easily find it. Now, it has become just another component of social media marketing. According to a report from Sprout Social, there are over 1 million hashtags on Instagram alone but, as many businesses find out, they can be quite complicated to create and even more challenging to track correctly.
Hashtags are a great way to categorize content, but there is so much that goes into using them correctly. These are my tips when I am using hashtags for my social media!
1) Make them actionable - Hashtags should be something that your audience can actually do. For example, using something like #foodporn would mean nothing to your audience if they don't know what they are supposed to do with it. If you want to share a picture of a yummy dinner, share the photo and make the hashtag look like it is part of the photo #yummydinner. This way your audience understands exactly what to do with it.
2) Make them relevant - If there is something specific about an event – use that in your hashtag. It will keep people coming back for more, and allow you to target an audience. For example, if you're hosting a webinar, use the day and time in the hashtag #socialmediaweekendswebinar.
3) Be creative - Don't just throw any old word or phrase in front of a hashtag, if you want people to take notice make sure it's something that makes sense with what you're posting.
4) Don't overdo it - A little goes a long way with hashtags and they can quickly become annoying if they are overused or too generic.
#HashtagResearch is key to giving your content the best chance to be seen by your target audience. By understanding which #hashtags are being used most often, you can make sure your content is being seen by the people who are most likely to be interested in it.
Doing your #hashtagresearch can also help you understand which topics are trending, so you can join the conversation and be a part of the latest trends.
